Ful Medames (Egyptian Fava Beans)
A hearty, savory stew made from mashed fava beans, seasoned with garlic, lemon juice, cumin, and olive oil. Traditionally eaten for breakfast, it's served warm with pita bread and fresh vegetables.
Ingredients
- 2 cans plain fava beans
- ½ cup water
- Salt (to taste)
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 2 garlic cloves
- 2 hot peppers (optional)
- Juice of 1 lemon
- Extra virgin olive oil (for drizzling)
- 1 tomato, diced
- 1 cup chopped parsley
- Pita bread, cucumbers, onions, olives (for serving)
Instructions
- Warm fava beans with water in a pan. Season with salt and cumin.
- Mash beans lightly with a fork or potato masher.
- Crush garlic and hot peppers, mix with lemon juice.
- Pour garlic-pepper mix over beans. Drizzle with olive oil.
- Top with parsley, tomatoes, and extra peppers if desired.
- Serve with warm pita and fresh veggies.
